Sprint 1 Challenge
In 2002, a clarinet player named James Freeman quit his job as a professional musician and founded... a coffee cart.

James was obsessed with freshly roasted coffee. In those days in the San Francisco area, it was nearly impossible to find coffee beans with a roast date printed on the bag. So James decided to do it himself. He carefully roasted beans in a potting shed at home, then drove to farmers’ markets in Berkeley and Oakland, California, where he brewed and sold coffee by the cup. His manner was polite and accommodating, and the coffee was delicious.

Soon James and his cart, called Blue Bottle Coffee, developed a following. In 2005, he established a permanent Blue Bottle location in a friend’s San Francisco garage. Over the next few years, as the business grew, he slowly opened more cafs. By 2012, Blue Bottle had locations in San Francisco, Oakland, Manhattan, and Brooklyn. It was a business that many would have considered perfect. The coffee was ranked among the best nationwide. The baristas were friendly and knowledgeable. Even the interior design of the cafs was perfect: wooden shelves, tasteful ceramic tiles, and an understated logo in the perfect shade of sky blue.

But James didn’t consider the business perfect, or complete. He was still just as passionate about coffee and hospitality, and he wanted to bring the Blue Bottle experience to even more coffee lovers. He wanted to open more cafs. He wanted to deliver freshly roasted coffee to people’s homes, even if they didn’t live anywhere near a Blue Bottle location. If that coffee cart had been Sputnik, the next phase would be more like a moon shot.

So in October 2012, Blue Bottle Coffee raised $20 million from a group of Silicon Valley investors, including GV. James had many plans for that money, but one of the most obvious was building a better online store for selling fresh coffee beans. But Blue Bottle wasn’t a tech company and James was no expert at online retail. How could he translate the magic of his cafs to smartphones and laptops?

Several weeks later, on a bright December afternoon, Braden Kowitz and John Zeratsky met up with James. They sat around a counter, drank coffee, and discussed the challenge. The online store was important to the company. It would take time and money to get it right, and it was difficult to know where to start. In other words, it sounded like a perfect candidate for a sprint. James agreed.

They talked about who should be in the sprint. An obvious choice was the programmer who would be responsible for building Blue Bottle’s online store. But James also included Blue Bottle’s chief operating officer, chief finance officer, and communications manager. He included the customer service lead who handled questions and complaints. He even included the company’s executive chairman: Bryan Meehan, a retail expert who started a chain of organic grocery stores in the UK. And, of course, James himself would be in the room.

The online store was essentially a software project—something our team at GV was very familiar with. But this group looked almost nothing like a traditional software team. These were busy people, who would be missing a full week of important work. Would the sprint be worth their time?

•••

On Monday morning of our sprint week, the Blue Bottle team gathered in a conference room at GV’s office in San Francisco. We made a diagram on the whiteboard showing how coffee buyers might move through the online store. The Blue Bottle team targeted a new customer purchasing coffee beans. James wanted to focus the sprint on this scenario because it was so difficult. If they could establish credibility and create a great experience for someone who had never heard of Blue Bottle, let alone visited their cafs or tasted their coffee, then every other situation should be easy by comparison.

We ran into a big question: How should we organize the coffee? The shopper in this scenario would be choosing between a dozen or so varieties of bean, each in a nearly identical bag. And—unlike in Blue Bottle’s cafs—there would be no barista there to help choose.

At first, the answer seemed obvious. From boutique coffee roasters to mainstream giants like Starbucks, retailers tend to organize coffee by the geographic region where it was grown. Africa, Latin America, the Pacific. Honduran coffee vs. Ethiopian coffee. It would be logical for Blue Bottle to categorize their beans the same way.

“I have to admit something,” Braden announced. Everyone turned. “I’m into coffee, okay? I have a scale at home and everything.” Electronic scales are the hallmark of a true coffee freak. Owning a scale meant Braden weighed the water and coffee beans so that he could experiment and adjust ratios as he brewed. We’re talking science here. Coffee scales are accurate to a fraction of a gram.

Braden smiled and held his hands palm up. “I don’t know what the regions mean.” There was silence. We avoided looking at James. After all, Braden’s brave admission might be seen as heresy.

“That’s okay,” said James. The floodgate opened. John and Jake didn’t know the difference between coffee regions, and neither did Daniel Burka. We drank coffee together constantly, but none of us had ever admitted to our lack of sophistication.

Then Serah Giarusso, Blue Bottle’s customer service lead, snapped her fingers. “What do we do in the cafs?” she asked. After all, she went on, The Braden Situation must happen to baristas all the time: a customer comes in for coffee beans, but isn’t sure which kind to buy.

James is a slow and thoughtful speaker. He paused for a moment before he answered. “The brew method is very important,” he said. “So we train the baristas to ask the customer a simple question: ‘How do you make coffee at home?’ ” James explained that, depending on whether the customer used a Chemex, or a French press, or a Mr. Coffee, or whatever, the baristas could recommend a bean to match.

“ ‘How do you make coffee at home...?’ ” Braden repeated. Everyone jotted notes. James had started the sprint by explaining his vision: that the online store should match the hospitality of the cafs. It felt as if we were onto something.

The team spent the following day sketching ideas for the store. On Wednesday morning we had fifteen different solutions. That’s too many to test with customers, so the team voted on their favorites as a way to narrow it down. Then James, the decision-maker, made the final pick of three sketches to test.

The first sketch showed a literal approach to making the website match the cafs: It looked like the inside of a Blue Bottle caf, complete with wooden shelves. The second sketch included lots of text, to mirror the conversations baristas often have with customers. Finally, James chose a third sketch that organized coffee by brew method, bringing the “How do you make coffee at home?” question right onto the computer screen.

James had chosen three competing ideas. So which one should we prototype and test? The idea of a website that looked like the caf was the most appealing. Blue Bottle’s aesthetic is celebrated, and a matching website would look different from anything else in the market. We had to try that idea, and it wasn’t compatible with the other solutions. But those other solutions were also really intriguing. We couldn’t quite decide.

So we decided to prototype all three. After all, we didn’t need a functioning website. To appear real in our test, each fake online store only required a few key screens. Working together with the Blue Bottle team, we used Keynote presentation software to make a series of slides that looked like three real websites. With a little ingenuity, and without any computer programming at all, we stitched those screens into a prototype that our test customers could use.

On Friday, the team watched the customer interviews. One at a time, coffee drinkers shopped on several websites, with Blue Bottle’s three prototypes slipped in among the competitors. (To avoid tipping off the customers, we gave each prototype a fake name.)

Patterns emerged. The store with wooden shelves, which everyone had such high hopes for? We thought the prototype was beautiful, but customers said it was “cheesy” and “not trustworthy.” But the other two prototypes fared far better. The “How do you make coffee at home?” design worked seamlessly. And the “lots of text” design shocked us: People actually read all those words, and the extra information brought Blue Bottle’s voice and expertise to life. As one customer said, “These guys know coffee.”

James and the Blue Bottle team built confidence with their sprint. They were much closer to defining how their online store would work. What’s more, they’d done it in a way that felt true to their principles of hospitality. They believed the online store could be an authentic Blue Bottle experience.

A few months later, Blue Bottle launched their new website, and their online sales growth doubled. The next year, they acquired a coffee subscription company. With a bigger team and new technology, they expanded the web store and began experimenting with new offerings. They knew it would take years to get the online store right—but in the sprint, they started on their path.
The bigger the challenge, the better the sprint
If you’re starting a project that will take months or years—like Blue Bottle and their new online store—a sprint makes an excellent kickoff. But sprints aren’t only for long-term projects. Here are three challenging situations where sprints can help:

High Stakes

Like Blue Bottle Coffee, you’re facing a big problem and the solution will require a lot of time and money. It’s as if you’re the captain of a ship. A sprint is your chance to check the navigation charts and steer in the right direction before going full steam ahead.

Not Enough Time

You’re up against a deadline, like Savioke rushing to get their robot ready for the hotel pilot. You need good solutions, fast. As the name suggests, a sprint is built for speed.

Just Plain Stuck

Some important projects are hard to start. Others lose momentum along the way. In these situations, a sprint can be a booster rocket: a fresh approach to problem solving that helps you escape gravity’s clutches.

When we talk to startups about sprints, we encourage them to go after their most important problem. Running a sprint requires a lot of energy and focus. Don’t go for the small win, or the nice-to-have project, because people won’t bring their best efforts. They probably won’t even clear their schedules in the first place.

So how big is too big? Sure, sprints work great for websites and other software challenges. But what about really large, complicated problems?

Not long ago, Jake visited his friend David Lowe, a vice president of a company called Graco that manufactures pumps and sprayers. Graco is not a small startup. They’re a multinational company who have been in business for more than ninety years.

The company was developing a new kind of industrial pump—a machine used in assembly lines. David, the VP, wondered if a sprint might help lower the risk of the project. After all, it would take eighteen months and millions of dollars to design and manufacture the new pump. How could he be sure they were on the right track?

Jake doesn’t know anything about industrial assembly lines, but out of curiosity, he joined a meeting with the engineering team. “I’ll be honest,” Jake said. “An industrial pump sounds too complicated to prototype and test in a week.”

But the team wouldn’t give up so easily. If limited to just five days, they could prototype a brochure for the pump’s new features and try it in sales visits. That kind of test could answer questions about marketability.

But what about the pump itself? The engineers had ideas for that, too. To test ease-of-use, they could 3D print new nozzles and attach them to existing pumps. To test installation, they could bring cables and hoses to nearby manufacturing plants and get reactions from assembly line workers. These tests wouldn’t be perfect. But they would answer big questions, before the pump even existed.

Jake was wrong. The industrial pump wasn’t too complicated for a sprint. The team of engineers accepted the five-day constraint and used their domain expertise to think creatively. They sliced the challenge into important questions, and shortcuts started to appear.

The lesson? No problem is too large for a sprint. Yes, this statement sounds absurd, but there are two big reasons why it’s true. First, the sprint forces your team to focus on the most pressing questions. Second, the sprint allows you to learn from just the surface of a finished product. Blue Bottle could use a slide show to prototype the surface of a website—before they built the software and inventory processes to make it really work. Graco could use a brochure to prototype the surface of a sales conversation—before they engineered and built the product they were selling.
Solve the surface first
The surface is important. It’s where your product or service meets customers. Human beings are complex and fickle, so it’s impossible to predict how they’ll react to a brand-new solution. When our new ideas fail, it’s usually because we were overconfident about how well customers would understand and how much they would care.

Get that surface right, and you can work backward to figure out the underlying systems or technology. Focusing on the surface allows you to move fast and answer big questions before you commit to execution, which is why any challenge, no matter how large, can benefit from a sprint.

A masterpiece. This is the new ’START HERE’ book I recommend to all my design students as well as CEOs I work with.
By Xander Pollock
Jake, John, and Braden have synthesized the most important design-thinking concepts of today into a book that is worth its weight in gold. Seriously — I’ve translated the ideas and checklists in this book to tens of thousands of dollars already as a design consultant.

It’s weird... even after 4 years of studying Art & Design in college and 4 years of working at a big tech company, this book was STILL a revelation to me. It helped me understand and practice design in a whole new way. I was lucky to be mentored by top-tier designers. Now you can be mentored by some of the best designers in the Silicon Valley. Listen in on how they work and think...

90% of what you need to know about designing great products is in these 257 glorious pages. The other 10% is just blood, sweat and tears.

I look forward to testing this approach... great book!
By Mary
A very useful and enjoyable handbook that I'll be using to run student teams at the university. However, I was a little surprised to see Jake's comment in the preface about his 2009 team at Google: "... I decided to call it a design 'sprint'." Wait, what? Hasn't a five-day 'sprint', focused on delivering a working prototype, been *the* central feature of the scrum methodology of software design since 1993? That's when Jeff Sutherland and others worked together to design a structured methodology for teams that would be faster and better than 'waterfall project management'. SEE: many books, including a recent book by Sutherland's Scrum: The Art of Doing Twice the Work in Half the Time and Lacey's The Scrum Field Guide: Practical Advice for Your First Year (Agile Software Development Series). Sutherland's work was based, in turn, on the 1986 Harvard Business Review seminal article by Takeuchi and Nonaka, "The New New Product Development Game". Many industries outside of software development--- NPR, airlines, even classrooms-- have used sprints for decades; we used a 5-day sprint for museum exhibit design in 1998. IDEO has been doing something very similar for decades too.

That said, after stumbling over that initial terminology of 'same word-different meaning' and the somewhat-less-than-generous "I invented this!!" claim without a tip of the hat to all the great people who led the way, I did really enjoy the book. Jake has immense experience and has developed a beautifully structured design-build process that we can put immediately to use that is simpler to implement than a fully-featured scrum team. Thanks, Jake!

I tried it
By Kara Chambers
This was an enjoyable, quick read and I tested it out on my team. We are all pretty familiar with Lean Startup and are just getting into Design Thinking at our company. Our group reported back that they enjoyed the project.

It's a very detailed, practical guide and I just went for it and followed all the instructions in detail (down to buying the office supplies) - it gets you from big picture thinking to testing your ideas in a week. I found each person in our group seemed to excel at a different part of it: Introverts and Extroverts, techies and non techies. The hardest part was convincing people to spend five days in a meeting, but I found their timetable pretty generous -- we finished early some days. We found Monday the most meeting-heavy day so one tip might be to let the team know that it won't be as intensive after that. Some might be worried they'd be in for five full days of intense discussion -- they aren't.

Divided We Stand: The Battle Over Women's Rights and Family Values That Polarized American Politics, by Marjorie J. Spruill

Forty years ago, two women's movements drew a line in the sand between liberals and conservatives. The legacy of that rift is still evident today in American politics and social policies.

Gloria Steinem was quoted in 2015 (the New Yorker) as saying the National Women's Conference in 1977 "may take the prize as the most important event nobody knows about." After the United Nations established International Women's Year (IWY) in 1975, Congress mandated and funded state conferences to elect delegates to attend the National Women's Conference in Houston in 1977. At that conference, Bella Abzug, Steinem, and other feminists adopted a National Plan of Action, endorsing the hot-button issues of abortion rights, the Equal Rights Amendment, and gay rights--the latter a new issue in national politics. Across town, Phyllis Schlafly, Lottie Beth Hobbs, and the conservative women's movement held a massive rally to protest federally funded feminism and launch a Pro-Family movement.

Although much has been written about the role that social issues have played in politics, little attention has been given to the historical impact of women activists on both sides. DIVIDED WE STAND reveals how the battle between feminists and their conservative challengers divided the nation as Democrats continued to support women's rights and Republicans cast themselves as the party of family values.

The women's rights movement and the conservative women's movement have irrevocably affected the course of modern American history. We cannot fully understand the present without appreciating the events leading up to Houston and thereafter.

“Human rights apply equally to Soviet dissidents, Chilean peasants and American women.” —Barbara Jordan

Gloria Steinem refers to the National Women’s Conference, held November 18-21, 1977, in Houston, Texas, as “the most important event nobody knows about.” Twenty thousand women attended the conference. These delegates were Democrats and Republicans, ranging from students to housewives to the presidents of national groups such as the League of Women Voters, the National Federation of Business and Professional Women, and the National Organization for Women. The star-studded cast included Bella Abzug, Margaret Mead, Betty Friedan, Texas’s Barbara Jordan, Maya Angelou, Jean Stapleton (aka Edith Bunker of All in the Family), Coretta Scott King, and three first ladies of the United States.

With a remarkable degree of unity, a National Plan of Action titled The Spirit of Houston was adopted at the conference and presented to President Jimmy Carter. This plan included recommendations on education and employment discrimination, equal access to credit, extending social security benefits to homemakers, aid to elderly and disabled women, prevention of domestic violence, rape, and child abuse, ratifying the Equal Rights Amendment, and greater participation for women in foreign policy, among other issues.

“Solidarity among feminists was not the same as solidarity among American women,” Spruill notes. As the conference began, across town fifteen to twenty thousand people converged on the Astro Arena for a Pro-Life, Pro-Family Rally, headed by Phyllis Schlafly. Schlafly was the leader of Stop-ERA (Stop Taking Our Privileges), and she created the right-wing Eagle Forum to “combat women’s lib,” which they were convinced was a Communist plot to knock American women, “beneficiaries of a tradition of special respect for women which dates back from the Christian Age of Chivalry,” off the mythical pedestal.

Divided We Stand: The Battle Over Women’s Rights and Family Values That Polarized American Politics is Professor Marjorie J. Spruill’s account of the events leading to the National Women’s Conference, the disappointing results, and the rise of social conservatives. “There were two women’s movements in the 1970s: a women’s rights movement that enjoyed tremendous success,” Spruill writes, “and a conservative women’s movement that formed in opposition.… Each played an essential role in the making of modern American political culture.” Spruill draws a direct line between these two movements and the rigidly divided electorate of today.

Spruill provides a concise history of second-wave feminism and the rise of social conservatives, as well as a detailed account of the historic gains of feminism in the 1970s. Heavily footnoted, the narrative bogs down intermittently in names and acronyms, but Divided We Stand isn’t a strenuously academic work, and is quite readable for a general audience.

Divided We Stand is filled with countless priceless details of the times. Airline executives defending before Congress their policy of “measurement” checks for stewardesses claimed the checks were “essential to their business.” Representative Martha Griffiths asked, “What are you running, an airline or a whorehouse?” Checkmate.

Spruill’s epilogue does a superb job of wrapping up events since Ronald Reagan took office, including the 2016 election, which is a tall order. An important contribution to a time and a subject that should be better known, the story told in Divided We Stand retains its relevance, and indeed has renewed urgency.

How Women Polarized American Politics
By Thomas J. Farrell
In the new book Divided We Stand: The Battle Over Women’s Rights and Family Values That Polarized American Politics (Bloomsbury, 2017), Marjorie J. Spruill in history at the University of South Carolina, who has authored or edited ten previous books, centers her attention on the two competing women’s conferences held in Houston, Texas, over the weekend of November 18-21, 1977.

However, even though Spruill includes photographs of a number of women, photos of women involved in the pro-feminist conference decidedly outnumber photos of women in the conservative anti-feminist conference.

But Spruill tends to be thorough and even-handed and balanced in her account of the two competing women’s movements. She hopes that her “book will help readers understand” “the troubled state of our political culture” (page 346). Perhaps it will.

Now, out of the spirit of the black civil rights movement of the 1950s and 1960s protesting the Jim Crow laws and customs in the South, the feminist women’s movement (also known as second wave feminism) emerged in the 1960s and 1970s protesting American laws and customs involving women. The conservative anti-feminist women’s movement emerged to counter-balance the feminist women’s movement.

Second-wave feminists dubbed men who dared to oppose them and their agenda as male chauvinist pigs. For understandable reasons, most self-respecting men preferred not to be sneered at as male chauvinist pigs. But the aging tennis player Bobby Riggs gamely described himself as a male chauvinist pig in the lead up to his famous tennis match with Billie Jean King (Spruill, page 4). However, for understandable reasons, not many other men followed his example.

In literary studies, the use of such vituperation is known as flyting. For example, in the story of David and Goliath in the Hebrew Bible (1Sam. 17:43-47), Goliath excels at the use of vituperation. In the 2016 presidential campaign, Donald J. Trump of New York vigorously used vituperation.

The American Jesuit cultural historian and theorist Walter J. Ong (1912-2003; Ph.D. in English, Harvard University, 1955) of Saint Louis University, the Jesuit university in St. Louis, Missouri, discusses the practice of flyting in the following three books:

(1) The Presence of the Word: Some Prolegomena for Cultural and Religious History (Yale University Press, 1967, pages 197, 207-222, and 259), the expanded version of Ong’s 1964 Terry Lectures at Yale University;

(2) Fighting for Life: Contest, Sexuality, and Consciousness (Cornell University Press, 1981, pages 108, 125, 142, and 154; also see pages 110-111 regarding Bobby Riggs and Billie Jean King), Ong’s 1979 Messenger Lectures at Cornell University;

(3) Orality and Literacy: The Technologizing of the Word (Methuen, 1982, pages 43-45), Ong’s most widely known book.

In my estimate, Ong’s seminal work in cultural studies in these books and numerous other publications represents the road not taken by most second-wave feminists interested in cultural studies.

However, in the book Hillary's Choice (Random House, 1999, pages 48-49 and 66), Gail Sheehy reports that young Hillary Rodham (born in 1947) in the summer of 1967 read Ong's other 1967 book In the Human Grain: Further Explorations in Contemporary Culture (Macmillan) and was deeply impressed with it.

For a complete bibliography of Ong’s publications over the years, see the late Thomas M. Walsh’s “Walter J. Ong, S.J.: A Bibliography 1929-2006” in the anthology Language, Culture, and Identity: The Legacy of Walter J. Ong, S.J., edited by Sara van den Berg and Walsh (Hampton Press, 2011, pages 185-245).

Now, even though second-wave feminists made the vituperative expression “male chauvinist pig” famous, their ways of expressing themselves otherwise would not be likened to Goliath’s way of expressing himself – or to Trump’s. The pattern of verbal expression known as flyting typically involves not only vituperation about real or imagined adversaries but also boasting about oneself. But second-wave feminists eschewed self-boasting in favor of protesting about one thing or another.

By definition, women could not be called male chauvinist pigs. So it fell to other women such as Phyllis Schlafly (1924-2016) to challenge the second-wave feminists.

The pro-feminist conference in Houston in 1977 was government-sponsored. By contrast, the anti-feminist conference in Houston the same weekend in 1977 was organized by Phyllis Schlafly and her conservative allies without official government support. According to Spruill, young Phyllis completed her undergraduate studies at Washington University in St. Louis in three years, and then she earned a master’s degree in political science at Radcliffe. In 1949, she married the Harvard-educated lawyer Fred Schlafly (Spruill, pages 76-77). Of all of the women that Spruill mentions in her book, Phyllis Schlafly emerges as one of the most energetic and effective political organizers. By all accounts, she was the most effective opponent in the effort to stop the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) from being ratified. Remarkably, she worked from her home office in Alton, Illinois, across the river from St. Louis, Missouri, not from an office in the media center of the world in New York City, nor from an office in the center of the federal government in Washington, D.C. In the index in Spruill’s books, there are far more subheadings under Phyllis Schlafly’s name and far more page references to her than to any other individual person in the book.

Now, as far as I know, Ong did not publish anything in which he mentions Phyllis Schlafly, and as far as I know, she did not publish anything in which she mentions Ong. However, they may have met one another at some social function in St. Louis. She was related by marriage to Daniel L. Schlafly, Sr., who served as the first lay chair of the new mostly lay board of trustees instituted at Saint Louis University, the Jesuit university where Ong taught. In 1978, Ong served as the first Roman Catholic priest ever elected president of the Modern Language Association of America. But as far as I know, he did not publish anything about the two competing women’s conferences in Houston in 1977 – or anything specific about second-wave feminism or the ERA. In general, he was not a conservative Catholic, as Phyllis Schlafly was.

Now, by November 18-21, 1977, the ERA favored by pro-feminist forces needed to be ratified in only three more states in the United States to become the law of the land. However, despite an official extension for the ratification period, the ERA was never ratified in three more states. Thus in the end, Phyllis Schlafly and her conservative allies emerged victorious in their efforts to stop the ERA from being ratified. She had been active in the Stop-ERA movement since 1972 (Spruill, page 9).

The pro-feminist conference in Houston was not just government-backed – it had bipartisan support in the government – and so did the ERA at the time. In the terminology used in the 2016 presidential campaign, the elites tended to favor the pro-feminist conference in 1977.

As Spruill reports, Egyptian president Anwar Sadat happened to travel to Israel the same weekend in 1977 (page 4). As a result, many newspapers put news stories about the pro-feminist conference in Houston below the fold on the front page (page 232). Nevertheless, the pro-feminist conference was otherwise a “media extravaganza” (page 5).

Disclosure: I did not feel strongly about the ERA one way or the other. At the time, the pro-feminist conference in Houston was of no particular interest to me, just as the Woodstock festival in New York was of no particular interest to me at the time. However, I can understand intellectually how the pro-feminist conference in Houston could have had a big impact on the second-wave feminists who participated in it.

Now, despite the bipartisan support for the ERA that Spruill reports as existing in November 1977, conservatives effectively used anti-60s rhetoric to advance their political fortunes, as Philip Jenkins details in his book Decade of Nightmares: The end of the Sixties and the Making of Eighties America (Oxford University Press, 2006).

Now, in the 2016 presidential election, the Democratic Party’s candidate was a second-wave feminist, former secretary of state Hillary Rodham Clinton, and the Republican Party’s candidate was a male chauvinist pig.

The Democratic second-wave feminist won the popular vote by million votes, thanks to big margins of victory in certain large states.

But the Republican male chauvinist pig won a decisive electoral victory, thanks to a combined total of 77,000 Trump voters in three states: Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin.

Predictably, the conservative anti-feminist Phyllis Schlafly, a well-educated Roman Catholic, publicly endorsed the male chauvinist pig, not the feminist. Candidate Trump repaid her endorsement by delivering a eulogy at her funeral Mass in St. Louis (Spruill, page 341).

But Spruill does not discuss whether Trump had any connections with Phyllis Schlafly prior to his 2016 presidential campaign – or his views of the ERA.

Had the feminist emerged victorious in the 2016 presidential election, we would undoubtedly be reading encomiums about the pro-feminist conference in 1977 in 2017 as part of the fortieth anniversary commemorative of the memorable conference. So the second-wave feminists were defeated not only in their effort to get the ERA ratified but also in their effort to get a second-wave feminist elected president in 2016 – losing to a male chauvinist pig in 2016.

Even though Hillary is a symbol of second-wave feminists, Spruill does not discuss Hillary’s views of the two competing women’s conferences in Houston in 1977 – before she had emerged as a prominent national figure – or her views of the ERA.
Spruill quotes journalist Joe Klein’s account of the pro-feminist conference in Houston: “Joe Klein, covering the [pro-feminist] conference [in Houston in 1977] for Rolling Stone, noted tongue in cheek that, despite strong feelings, ‘there was a remarkable absence of aggression.’ ‘There was real anger,’ he said, ‘but not even the slightest intimation of violence, not a push or a shove. There was intolerance, but not all that much yelling . . . Try as they might, women had never been trained to be aggressive, and therefore weren’t too good at it, which made for a more civilized gathering’” (Spruill, page 225).

But because Trump attended a military academy in high school, he was presumably trained there to be aggressive. In the 2016 presidential campaign, he excelled at the use of flyting (e.g., “crooked Hillary”).

By contrast, Hillary’s campaign events in 2016 were “more civilized gatherings” (in Joe Klein’s words) than Trump’s campaign events in 2016 were. Even though Hillary is a second-wave feminist, she did not in her campaign explicitly characterize Trump as a male chauvinist pig.

Spruill reports that Hillary in the 2016 presidential election “performed much better with white women than any Democratic presidential candidate in decades, winning 51 percent of white women with college degrees and married women by 2 points – [but] 62 percent of non-college women voted for Trump” (page 343).

Nevertheless, second-wave feminists deserve their fair share of credit or blame for polarizing American politics and thereby contributing to the improbable election of so-called President Trump, a male chauvinist pig if ever there was one.

As Spruill notes in passing, there was a backlash against the second-wave feminists in the 1980s (page 344). In the lead-up to the 2016 presidential election, I published a number of op-ed commentaries online warning that it was not unthinkable that Trump could emerged victorious. Even though I myself voted for Hillary, I do not see Trump’s victory as “one of the most stunning upsets in American political history,” as Spruill sees it (page 343).

The Bodice Rippers, by Lori Green, C.L. McCullough

What would happen if Barbara Cartland met the Marx Brothers? The Bodice Rippers is a crazy epistolary romp through the halls of academia, the hedgerows of England and the closets of the library. When sex crazed, basically virginal cousins Hortensia and Clementine Gipson set off on a search for tenure, all Hell breaks loose with baritones who might be tenors, British history that might have roots in the American deep south and deflowering that possibly needs medical insurance. There are plenty of pink fizzy drinks, inner ear problems and the kind of bodice ripping writing to make any historical fiction lover weep.

A Ripping Good Yarn!
By L. Brown
Being a friend to the authors and having read quite a few of their letter/email stories, it was with great anticipation that I began Bodice Rippers. And I wasn't disappointed!

The story seems disjointed and yet falls together in a most charming and funny way. Between the two leading protagonists, some hot guys, several accents of questionable nature and a lot of misadventure, I would have to admit this story had me literally 'lol'ing'. Seriously. Even now, almost 2 days later, I still chuckle over the line about teh security guard's mother and satan.

This story is a must for anyone with a sense of the ridiculous and a great sense of humour. The authors have both of these things in abundance and it's a great thing they are now sharing with others. Five stars ladies, five stars!

History comes to life
By Laura Kay
Art Detective, Lauren O'farrell, is investigating art stolen during World War ll in hopes of restoring pieces to their rightful owners. She is looking into, Hanna Fleischmann, who was rumored to be a Nazi Collaborator. She contacts Hanna's elderly daughter, Isabella to probe about Hanna's past. She is stunned when Isabella not only invites her into her home, but also shockingly announces she has possession of a Kandinsky painting, which was believed to have been destroyed during the war. Isabella believes she must finally tell her mother's story before history writes it.

Hanna Schmid was just a young girl when she took off from her German country home. She found work in the affluent home of Moses Fleischmann, a Jewish art dealer. The story of Hanna begins in 1900. She begins with working in the Fleischmann home and later Moses realizes her love for art and she begins working in his gallery where she eventually becomes an art dealer. She lives in Germany with her family during World War l. After Hitler takes over the life Hanna knows and loves is over. In order to survive Hanna must do the unthinkable and work with the Nazis. The story of Hanna Schmid is deeper and darker than even her daughter realizes.

I normally give myself a week for a book, but I went over my week mark with The Woman Who Heard Color. I went over because I needed to put the book down a number of times and really absorb what I was reading. It was fascinating to me to read a story about what life may have been like for German's living during Hitler's reign. I was completely engrossed in Hanna's story. I would read for awhile about the changes Hitler was making and would have to stop and realize how blessed I am to live in the US today--no matter what are political views are we are free to have them and to express them.

I tend to read during the evenings and the last few nights I'd lay in bed for a bit and just think about the story...it felt as if I was really reading Hanna's story. This is a story filled with history, art, mystery, suspense; it is beautifully written and filled with heart palpitating moments. I was captivated by The Woman Who Heard Color. I highly highly recommend it.

A worthy historical novel
By historybuff
This is a great read. Although I generally prefer non-fiction, I found this novel to be thought-provoking and historically accurate. It tells the story of a young German woman, Hanna, who gets caught up in the modern art movement in Munich leading up to World War II. The author deftly weaves the story together, partly from Hanna's point of view and partly from the memories of her eldely daughter many years later. We experience four decades of German history leading up to the War, become involved in the lively art scene in Munich with the likes of Vasily Kandinsky and Franz Marc, and dispair when Hitler declares their art to be "degenerate" and has it purged from German museums. The author does a very nice job of developing her characters--people we can care about. She gives a first-hand account of the terror of living under the Nazi regime. The story kept my attention to the last page, with a good mix of education, suspense, mystery, and haunting questions about inhumanity and censorship.

the woman who heard colors
By hambone armstrong
I must admit that had I had seen "The Woman Who Heard Colors" by Kelly Jones in a book display, I may have dismissed it for just another romance novel.I would have missed out on a compelling story about pre-WWII and how families were affected by an evil leader's rise to power.I attended a book signing by the author and was drawn into the historical facts that she spoke of and gave it a go.I was not disappointed. The fiction novel is centered around Europe, artists, art, and families and how they were affected by the turbulent times such as they were. The author tells a great story, that moves along at an exciting pace, and gives wonderful insight into some times in our history that few people around the world, at that time, knew was looming on the horizon. The characters are realistic and interesting and the story brings some heartfelt emotions and some big surprises all woven together into a very worthwhile read
