Didn't meet Expectation .
By A. khan
First of all let me tell you that I have bought both the 1st and 2nd ( New ) edition and the latter is worse. I had bought the 1st edition years back and it didn't meet my expectations. When the second edition was released , I bought that with the hope that there might be some improvements but to my surprise I found it worse than the first because the text was cut short by replacing the descriptive and explanatory style of text with brief points without proper grammar and sentence structures. After checking some chapters in this new edition ( 2nd edition ) I returned it and went back to the 1st. So this review is mainly about the 1st edition which I had bought on Amazon after looking inside few of its pages . When the book arrived and i read some chapters in it including neonatalogy . Most topics / diseases had enough details with good headings like " Best initial Test " , " Next Step in management " , " Treatment " and " Prognosis ' BUT the presentation and description after each heading was very poor in terms of the structure of sentences . At many places it became vague enough to make it difficult to grasp any clear concept of a topic . The signs and symptoms were just a list of features like a Laundry List without any emphasis on their timing of occurrence during the course of disease . Similarly there was no emphasis on frequency or specificity of signs/symptoms. For example , most diseases were like { Fever , Lethargy , Poor Feeding , Weight Loss, Abdominal distention , Hypotonia , Irritability , Hearing Loss, Petechiae , Anemia, Vomiting , Edema , weight loss etc etc }. The book lists such signs and symptoms under the headings of " key features " . We know that most diseases share the same signs and symptoms and therefore it becomes difficult to make a mental picture of a disease presentation without specifying a little bit about their frequency, timing or sequence of occurrence or any diagnostic value. Although the book does give a heading " BACKGROUND " before most diseases summarizing their pathophysiology but misses many points about the epidemiology ( the age range of onset , incidence in any specific gender , socioeconomic group , race etc ) which makes it difficult to distinguish between diseases . It is here that this book lacks clarity of information about disease presentation. The diagnostic tests were comparatively better presented by specifying which test should be don first and which test is more accurate but the therapeutic options were again not very helpful in decision making due to poverty of language and grammar , though most options were present in majority of the topics .
. Another weakness in the book is the lack of any pictures , slides, or charts or graphs . It is a plain text and during reading you may crave to see stuff like rashes , features of genetic syndromes , etc you have to go to other sources .
Overall , I wont agree with anyone giving the book a one or two stars because the book does cover a lot of material and information about a vast majority of tested topics , but the language and presentation is not smooth . I cannot properly explain it , but what i mean is that you won't feel the satisfaction of making differentiation between different disease presentations , and making clear decisions about which therapy to use at which time . Once again , the book does not lack in details about a topic but the way it teaches you. Anyways , that is my personal opinion and you may need to see the book for yourself .

Fine. (I didn't go far in this last as ...
By David Morris
As a mighty experienced Boards taker (Boarded certified and continually recertified in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics since 1991, and subspecialty Boarded in Sleep Disorders Medicine), I've been around the proverbial block a few times. I just returned home after taking my Peds Recert 2014, so my perspective is fresh...and of all the things I spent time on, this book probably had the lowest return for the effort. My prep was spread over several months, and included reading and highlighting "Master the Boards" from cover to cover; working through a meaningful chunk of the 2013 Prep Reference DVD, concentrating on the Self Assessment questions, answers and especially Critiques; and some reading of Pediatric Board Recertification Review by Katie S. Fine. (I didn't go far in this last as the questions and text seemed less directed, more shallow than I needed.) The Cvetnic book is focused more on a quick overview, and might be good to give the broad strokes big picture for some folks, but I've found I learn best from actually doing questions, then following up ones I've missed. This book has no questions, and doesn't really give enough depth to prepare. Best of all was the ABP's MOC practice test, though it didn't have critiques (take notes during the online testing!).
Looking back, I'm not sure how much the Cvetnik book helped, though I do think it was the best book choice available at this time. Next time around I might go with the practice questions alone....

Awesome Review Book!!
By Lemys
As you know, there are so few reliable board review resources available to prepare for the exam. This book is spot on and helped me to conquer the boards. It was my main reference book. I annotated each topic within each subject and knew it inside and out. Some topics were a bit thin on information, for example, Pulmonary, but I added additional information to that section based on repetitive disease states I encountered when doing questions. I supplemented this book with Prep Questions, Medstudy Questions and Exam Master Question Bank. Good luck!!
