Introduction to Radio Frequency Design

What can you say about Wes Hayward that hasn't been said already? This book should be required reading for RF/Microwave designers. It covers all the basic and fundamental subjects of RF design with insight and clarity. I particularly liked the chapter on filter theory and design, crystal filters especially. The coverage of resonant circuits in general is very good. This is a staple in my brief case and rarely spends much time on the shelf. I recommend it highly to anyone in need of a good RF design reference text.

Terrible Title

I bought "Introduction to Radio Frequency Design" because thats exactly what I was looking for. I'm your average electronics hobbyist looking for an introduction to things like oscillators, frequency synthesis, RF filters, modulation techniques and other basics that relate to designing RF circuits. What I got was a book that focuses heavily (almost exclusively) on modeling RF circuits mathematically which makes the book almost useless for me and others looking for such "introductory" material. This book assumes that you've have all the mathematical and physics training that comes with something like an electrical engineering degree, so if that describes you and your interested in maximizing your RF circuits, then this may be the book for you. But if your interested in actual introductory material to basic RF design I'd suggest you find something else.

Superb introduction to key concepts of RF circuit design.

This classic book provides a well presented introduction to RF circuit design, focused on giving the reader a thorough grounding in the basic concepts needed to become a professional RF circuit designer. There is sufficient mathematical rigor to convince the pros, but not so much as to make the book inaccessable to students and more advanced amateurs. The author is an experienced state of the art RF designer and a life long "RF guy"--I've been reading his articles in QST magazine for 25 years. This experience and his devotion to the field come through strongly in his book. Though first published in the early 1980's, most of the material is basically timeless. I do hope Wes will someday revise it to include newer RF IC design as well. The book deserves to be in the library of every professional, and especially those just starting in the field.

A superb introduction to SDRs in general, and an essential item for anyone wanting to look "under the hood" of the excellent OpenHPSDR series of radios, including the Anan 100D, Hermes, etc.

The text is very well written and easily understood, and the illustrations, tables, and block diagrams are extremely valuable.

I'd give it 6 stars [or more] if that were an option!

This book was very informative, but it is not for a newcomer to ham radio. A basic grasp of the workings of conventional receivers and transmitters is necessary to understanding the functions described -- those which are being performed by the software.

Mi piace tantissimo Ancelotti come persona e credo che sia una grande allenatore. Quindi mi piace tantissimo questa publicazione. Il libro e' un racconta della sua esperienza in Italia e al estero. Segue la carriera di Carletto fra gli anni e i svilupi nel ruolo degli allenatore. Carletto racconta in dettaglio esempi delle sue esperienze in Inghilterra, Francia e la Spagna e fa contrasti interessanti. Penso che questo lavoro sarebbe utile per alcun allenatore a livello amatorialeche vuole imparare un po di piu per rendere una seduta di allenamento piu efficace e divertente .

About the Author

Paul Johannesson holds a position as a professor at Stockholm University, where he works in the area of information systems. Johannesson has published more than 100 journal and conference papers on topics including federated information systems, languages for conceptual modelling, the use of linguistic instruments in information systems, process integration, e-commerce systems design, and e-health solution interoperability. He has also worked on design science methodology and applied it in numerous industrial projects.

Erik Perjons holds a position as a senior lecturer at Stockholm University. His research includes topics such as enterprise modelling, business process management, service oriented architecture, and knowledge management. He has published over 50 publications in international journals and conferences, participated in several national and international research projects in domains such as health care, e-government and telecom. In many of these projects, design science research has been applied.

Volume 2 of Make's "ReMaking History" series offers readers another skillful blending of history, scientific and mathematical principles, plus do-it-yourself projects that help demonstrate the spirit of discovery.

"The projects in this book," William Gurstelle explains, " were inspired by inventions of the time period from about 1700 to 1875, a period often known as the Industrial Revolution....." It was a time, he adds, when people began to "use machines instead of human labor to make lots stuff more cheaply, and doing so would be the way of the future."

Some of the DIY projects in this book are more difficult than others, and none of them appear appropriate for young children unless they are closely supervised by adults who are competent with tools. Middle schoolers and high schoolers should be supervised, as well, since some of the projects involve flames, corrosive chemicals, drills and other tools.

Some of the book's projects include: copper-plating a small metal sign; fireproofing some pieces of cloth and wood; creating a Chinese (or differential) windlass for lifting heavy weights with a simple crank and not much force; and making a static electricity generator, plus a Leydon jar similar to the one Benjamin Franklin used to prove that lightning was electricity and not something supernatural, "the work of demons."

Other projects include making a homemade electric arc lamp (powered by a battery and not a wall socket!), making a vacuum pump, making a tuning fork, and making vulcanized rubber erasers.

Gurstelle's book is well illustrated with photographs, drawings and other graphics. And his text is nicely written and easily accessible. While keeping his explanations short and to the point, he offers engaging details about the history, people, and beneficial accidents or encounters that enabled the discoveries to occur and be exploited for progress.
