All principals everywhere need to read this book. In todays world, teachers are blamed for all the wrong things.
It is simple- tell teachers that they make a difference in your school and they will follow you everywhere.
We all need to know our hard efforts make a difference. If you are a teacher- buy this and slip in in your principal's mailbox, perhaps he/ she might read it. Blaming teachers for students not learning is like blaming doctors for people getting sick. Give compliments to teachers- it is powerful!

Own and just bought as a gift!!

I recommend this book for anyone going into administration or a leadership role. Gives excellent ideas on how to show your staff you greatly appreciate them without spending a lot of $$$. Also gives ideas for small, random "thank you's". Educators work very hard to mold successful little people and many times, they are left feeling unappreciated. A little hand written note goes a long way to many people.

Do you really need a book of writing on craft on your bookshelf? Is craft not about doing rather than reading? Do things not speak for themselves? Is this the real thing?

If we glance sideways at the art world we see that whilst artists make, and at art college they learn to speak and write well about their making, the work of the art critic, the gallery owner and curator are equally if not more important in forming opinion about what is good, what is important and what is not. Critical writing is a difficult thing to do well. It requires a deep understanding of the field, of what is happening, what is current, what is new and important. To do a field justice a commentator needs to put the legwork in to see the shows, to visit the workshops, to read what everyone else is saying, to have an understanding of what is going on. Perhaps if we could use a music analogy we would look to the late great John Peel who simply listened to more music than anyone else, he loved music and always had something interesting to share. His knowledge was comprehensive yet he was also incredibly humble and simply wanted to share his excitement about whatever new band he had just found.

To me this is how I feel when I read Tanya Harrod's writing. There is a feeling of discovery, of understanding the field I work in in a much deeper way as I glimpse it through the eyes of someone who has studied it closely and passionately for many years. The Real Thing is an anthology of Tanya's writings in various quality newspapers and magazines from the past 30 years. I find it to be a total delight to dip into at random, to enjoy a couple of pages on such diverse subjects as "What is Folk Art?" "Why shouldn't a pot be as beautiful as a painting?", "The flourish of wood and iron", Quaryman's vernacular", "Our past remade in China", "Craft without politics" or "Why don't we hate Etsy?"

I used to subscribe to Crafts Magazine and the highlight was always Tanya's column inside the back cover. Now here are some of the best of them from 30 years collated together, simply fantastic. The final section of the book is a collection of writings about people, here I have to declare an interest and abandon objectivity since the section starts with "William Morris in our time" and ends with "Robin Wood, traditional radical" along the way amongst many others we have "Eric Gill, workman", "Le Corbusier, craft lover", Lucie Rie and reticence", and "Svend Bayer and the aesthetics of denial"

This new book is a wonderful record of Tanya's championing of the field of craft and providing it with the best critical writing for 30 years. It stands as a great work on it's own and should be essential reading for all craftspeople to better understand the complexities of what it means to make things in the 21st century, it tells the story behind the things, I would highly recommend it.

About the Author
Nicholas Walliman is a qualified architect and Senior Lecturer in the School of the Built Environment at Oxford Brookes University and a researcher associate in the Oxford Institute for Sustainable Development. After many years of practice in architecture in the UK and abroad, he returned to academic life to do his PhD. This experience raised his interest in research theory and methods, and he was subsequently asked by the university to write a distance learning course to guide postgraduate students embarking on research degrees. This course provided the raw material and incentive for writing this book. He has subsequently published several other books on research theory and methods for students and practitioners at various levels of expertise. He is currently conducting research with a team of architects and environmental scientists as part of the Oxford Brookes Institute for Sustainable Development. They are engaged in nationally and internationally funded projects on a range of aspects of building technology, such as energy saving building envelope design, mitigation of the effects of floods on buildings and advanced construction methods. He has published numerous research papers on aspects of architectural technology. He is also supervising several PhD and Masters students. Despite this emphasis on science and technology, his work with research students covers many other aspects of architecture and its relationship to society, such as vernacular architecture, the effects of westernisation, architectural education, conservation, administration and sustainable design.

No, this manual does not meet my need for a comprehensive, yet simple, repair and how-to diagnostic document. It appears that about every B&S small engine is covered in this publication except the B&S engines that are on my machines.

Just the Right Tempo and Timbre

Jacobsen's history of worldwide Christianity illustrates a musician's sense of the tempo of fine pedagogy and the timbre of careful historiography.

As to his tempo of pedagogy, Jacobsen writes engagingly. He knows when to provide specific clarifying examples: the statement read aloud by Spanish conquistadores (335), or a world map showing how a pope divided the world between Portuguese and Spanish Catholics (360). He knows how to catch the ear of the reader with alliteration: "crack cocaine, crime, and crumbling" (238), "family, friendship, and faith" (239), and "martyrdom to monasticism" (283). He knows how to write simply to avoid any impression of "snowing" the reader, as in "10-yearly" instead of "decennial" (261). He is kind to repeat definitions without expecting us to remember them across multiple chapters: glocalism (358, 373), Theotokos (15, 343), and millet (71, 305).

As to his timbre of historiography, Jacobsen focuses on centers, not on boundaries (269), as he points out that Irenaeus did (274). He is tentative rather than dogmatic, as in the "supposed" schism of 1054 (336). He is about as even-handed and non-Eurocentric as it's possible to be, irenic even in his treatment of the Crusades. When he does mention a really minor point like the Italo-Catholics in Sicily, it ends up being a supporting point later, in this case about the Crusades (336). He has always in mind Christianity on the ground and not just the Christianity of scholars. For example, even though scholars knew the world was round even in classical Greek times, and had even calculated its diameter, Jacobsen is right that "no one really knew what it meant to live on a globe" until modern times (346).

In addition to being a musician, Jacobsen is also a magician in what he chooses to reveal and to conceal. I'm glad that he mentioned Pandita Ramabai (60), Alpha courses (134), Cursillos (140), Thomas Jefferson's "Bible" (351), Raymond Lull (332), and Friedrich Schleiermacher (351). I wished only for two examples that would have exemplified his themes that I missed: Catholic "new evangelism" (205) includes Pope John Paul II's emphasis on Theology of the Body, and Charles Lwanda of Uganda is honored as a saint by both Catholic and Anglican communities.

A book like this risks becoming obsolete fast, but in the past year the only change that needs to be made so far is to redraw maps to include South Sudan.

Who should read this book? Students of the history of Christianity, whether in a formal course or not.
It can be read out of order because of its careful modular approach, yet it is strongly coherent in its vision.

The index is good, but when a word is missing there (say for example, "comity") a full-text search can be done on Amazon.com. I only found three typographical errors: Aquinas' birth year is 1225 (29), there were 27 books in the NT as of c. 360 (271, Fig. 14.1), and 1179 marked the third not the second Lateran Council (320, Fig. 16.1). Authors don't create or proof indexes, but Symeon Styletes is conflated with Symeon the Theologian in the index (397).

culture, theology and geography - toward the development of Christianity

One third of the world's population is Christian. The World's Christians explores how this came to be by tracing the development of the faith over time with considerable attention to culture, theology and geography. While the volume itself is lengthy and comprehensive, it is an entry level text designed to be accessible to all readers. I highly recommend the text for church libraries, for individuals who want a richer understanding of the history of the faith, and as a resource guide for those teaching small groups or Sunday school classes (especially those studying Christian traditions other than their own).

The book is divided into three parts:

(1) Who They Are tells the story of the four traditions: Orthodox, Catholic, Protestant, and Pentecostal/Charismatic. Each of these brief chapters includes sections on the tradition's spirituality, understanding of salvation, structure, and history. Jacobsen also offers a sense of the relative size of each group, relying on his own best guesses and explaining how he arrived at each.

(2) Where They Are examines the history and contemporary status of Christianity in the world's nine regions. These chapters are ordered to reflect the chronology of when Christianity arrived in each region, beginning with the earliest: the Middle East and North Africa; Eastern Europe; Central and South Asia; Western Europe; sub-Saharan Africa; East Asia; Latin America; North America; and Oceania.

(3) How They Got There explores what was happening during each of four time periods: (1) The Ancient Tradition: Beginnings to 500; (2) The Great Division and the Age of the East: 500 to 1000; (3) The Rise of the West and the Decline of the East: 1000 to 1500; and (4) Christianity in the Global Era: 1500 to the Present.

I wish this would come back in print, and (as usual with the Scary books), I wish they would issue them complete and unabridged! The Animals Merry Christmas is a tender and touching collection of stories about children for whom Christmas is at risk. As always, Scary's characters are anthropomorphized animals, whose dilemmas bridge the divide between species. His characters long for a specific toy, long for love, long to be needed. As children we begged for these stories again and again. I bought a used copy for my son, and now he does too!
