About the Author
Robert N. Anthony was the Ross Graham Walker Professor Emeritus of Management Control at Harvard Business School. Professor Anthony has been a director of Carborundum Company and Warnaco, Inc., both Fortune 500 companies; for 25 years he has been a trustee of Colby College, including five years as chairman of the board. He has consulted for many companies and government agencies, including General Motors Corp., AT&T, the General Accounting Office, and the Cost Accounting Standards Board. Among Professor Anthony's awards are the Distinguished Accounting Educator of the Year Award from AAA, Accounting Educator of the Year Award from Beta Alpha Psi, the Meritorious Service Award from the Executive Office of the President, the Distinguished Public Service Medal of the Department of Defense, Comptroller General's Award of the U.S. General Accounting Office and Distinguished Service Award of the Harvard Business School Association. Vijay Govindarajan is widely regarded as one of the world's leading experts on strategy and innovation, and he has been ranked #3 on the Thinkers 50 list of the world's most influential business thinkers. He is the Earl C. Daum 1924 Professor of International Business at the Amos Tuck School of Business Administration at Dartmouth College. Professional credits include Outstanding Teacher of the Year, voted by MBA students during several academic years; and Outstanding Business School Faculty, named by Business Week. Frank G.H. Hartmann is a Professor of Management Accounting and Management Control at the Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University in the Netherlands. Besides his managerial roles in the school, Frank conducts and supervises a number of behavioural Management Control research projects. His teaching spans MBA, executive and professional controller programmes as well as PhD programmes across the globe. Kalle Kraus is an Associate Professor in Accounting at the Stockholm School of Economics, Sweden. He has broad experience in teaching Management Control to students and management teams in Master, MBA and executive programmes. He has been awarded Best Teacher awards from Masters as well as MBA students. Kalle is involved in a number of research projects, including one on inter-organizational management control, strategy, innovation and risk management in the aerospace industry. His research is published in journals such as Management Accounting Research and Accounting, Auditing & Accountability Journal. Goran Nilsson is a Senior Lecturer in Management Control at Uppsala University, Sweden. After working as controller in two Electrolux companies for several years, he is now responsible for the Master programme in Management Controlling at his school. He works on a number of research projects in the fi elds of Lean Management and Corporate Governance. He is also engaged in consultancy projects with controllers, leading a knowledge sharing group of senior controllers. Goran is an editor for the Swedish handbook of Management Control which includes about 500 Swedish organizations.

Disappointing textbook with elementary explanations

This was the course textbook for my paper at the University of Otago, ACCT302 Accounting Performance Management. I was looking for a kindle version, or a preview of the book on google books (which I could not find) and I relegated to reading the hardcopy provided by my university's library under reserve section. I am used to reading journal articles, factual approaches, sound frameworks and structured approaches to problems and clear definitions.

I find the explanations to be so basic that the average competent commerce student would have already known and understood. I require in depth explanation and analysis in specific areas instead of a broad overview touching briefly on multiple factors (that other textbooks and course curriculum explained far better, and often in contradiction to the statements listed) without explaining the nuances. As oft said, the devil is in the details. Examples are dated, isolated and not investigated in depth pertaining to the environmental circumstances the firm is in and the proper attribution of success to respective efforts (or factors). The economy and business strategy have changed rapidly in the past two decades from 1990s to 2000s and now, 2010s.

This book comes out as writing too broadly about too much, too simplistic for a 300 level paper (3rd year study in Uni). It does not possess strong conceptual foundation, making it a poor read for people trying to learn about Management Accounting. I can only see myself consulting more authoritative journal articles and textbooks on the keywords & terms raised in this textbook.

This may be the problem with attempting to teach "Management" in general. If you have to get this textbook for your course at University, get a second hand one. It is NOT worth the first hand price. If you're looking to learn more about aspects of Management Accounting, forget this book entirely. It is a waste of time and there are better books out there.

Management Control Systems Up to Date

This text offers a very up-to-date elaboration of the various control techniques that managers may use and their strengths and weaknesses. It is an excellent tool for managers who are considering improvements in procedures to more fairly incentivize and motivate within the organization, and as holistically as possible.

WHY ARE YOU NOT JUST PUTTING SOME EFFORT INTO THIS AND FINISHING IT IN THE FOURTH BOOK, GIVING US A PROPER BOOK, NOT JUST ENOUGH PAGES THAT WOULD FILL A COUPLE OF CHAPTERS BY ANY OTHER AUTHORS THAT DON'T ROB THEIR CUSTOMERS BLIND. Good reference manual

This is a good resource manual for Fortran code builders. It has the basic resources that define Fortran concepts and syntax. No programming book can address specific problems you might be working with in code design, but the better books give you the foundations and tips necessary to keep you on track when using the language. I have found this manual helpful as it helps build code that will compile under all later version compilers.

well what can i say about one of the most preferred series for programming. this one is a real wacko 'cause it not only assumes your programming backgrond to be nill from starting therefore helping you to start off instantaneously. what i also liked about this book was the fact that the codes associated with the problems give one enough hands on experience so that one can tackle small scale problems very confidently.. i am sure that this book will prove to be a great help for all those who are looking for a very clear and intutive book for starting off learning Fortran 77

Buy it for what it is

My undergrad mech. eng. program uses MATLAB exclusively and I now need to learn FORTRAN for graduate school in less than a week. Despite the low rating for this book and knowing that it may be too elementary, I picked it up anyways just because of my experience with Schaum's outline.
Indeed, this book is very elementary and doesn't addresses some of the problems that I might need to solve. But this book is an OUTLINE of programming in FORTRAN. I consider myself an experienced programmer (not expert, just experienced) and I'm halfway through this book in an hour. It shows me all I need to know before I start exploring FORTRAN myself.
Overall, I think this book works like the owner manual for your car. You read it once then put it aside for a couple of years. But for $17, I think this is a very good buy. It will show you what you need to know fast. Just don't expect it to do your laundry and cook your dinner (dorm life humor).

A BROAD AND COMPREHENSIVE THEORY, COWRITTEN BY AN IMPORTANT PSYCHOANALYST

Franz Gabriel Alexander (1891-1964) was a Hungarian-American psychoanalyst and physician, who died before this book was published in 1966. The Introduction by Jules Wasserman states, "this is not merely a history of psychiatry---it is a history of man's eternal fears, his perennial hopes, and the physical, social, and philosophic devices that in various guises evolved into 'modern' psychiatry... American psychiatry is especially in need of the broad perspectives that [the authors] have invited us to survey in this book... Some readers may not be quite as certain as some psychiatric historians seem to be that man's understanding of himself has necessarily reached its peak in our post-Freudian era." (Pg. xi-xii)

They observe, "It is difficult to understand the incredible inhumanity with which mentally sick citizens were treated well into the era of the Enlightenment unless three major factors are taken into consideration: the almost complete ignorance of the nature of mental illness, the deeply felt dread of the insane, and finally, the belief then current that mental disease is incurable... The fear of mentally ill persons ... is fear of those elementary emotional forces that everybody harbors in his unconscious mind... it is the fear of ourselves." (Pg. 115)

They say, "The libido theory revised conventional views about the sexual instinct, which was considered an instinct of propagation. Freud concluded that there are many aspects of childhood behavior that are a source of sexually (sensually) pleasurable sensations... Freud's libido theory replaced this previous narrow definition of sexuality with a comprehensive theory of personality development in which biological ... and psychological growth are correlated." (Pg. 196-197)

They suggest, "Freud completely identified himself with his work. Its fate was his own... Lacking the support of a university or other academic institution, he had to create his own small scientific universe, his own journals, his own press. That doing this increased the isolation of psychoanalysis and perpetuated an aura of exclusiveness and intolerance was not easy for those on the inside of the movement to see... Bleuler, on the other hand... visualized the development of psychoanalysis in academic terms... but conceived of it as a forum for discussion and research, not as a carrier of a 'movement' whose 'truth' had to be guarded and proselytized." (Pg. 213)

They record, "a number of conflicts occurred among the original followers of Freud. Adler was the first to secede; he was followed by Jung... Freud and Adler held conflicting theoretical views... [but Adler's] stress on his own originality, was... an important factor prompting Adler to build a system radically different than Freud's... The reasons for Jung's secession... were more complex... There was an antagonism between the Viennese analysts on the one hand and Jung and the Zurich group on the other... After Bleuler left the [International Psychoanalytic] Association, it was still Freud's hope that Jung would share the leadership of the psychoanalytic movement with him." (Pg. 215) They add, "by 1929, Rank was able to separate himself from Freud's influence: he ceased making apologies and no longer wrote in the Freudian idiom." (Pg. 251)

They argue, "The theoretical framework of Jung's psychology cannot be verified by any clinical means at our disposal... Labelling individuals by attitudinal type does not promote understanding of the causes responsible for such differences in personality structure... The concept of the collective unconscious is just as speculative... Jung adopted the same terms that Freud used in psychoanalysis but gave them different meanings. This only confused things unnecessarily... A useful term coined by Jung that has survived and is still employed by both schools is 'complex.'" (Pg. 246) They also include an Appendix, "Jung and the National Socialists," which concludes, "What, then, motivated Jung to declare that Freud's psychology was unsuited for non-Jews... And what motivated him to play a prominent role in a new racially oriented psychology movement? Since it was obviously neither racial prejudice nor Nazi conviction...
